Cotton Percale Sheets: Only For Warm Weather Or Appropriate Year Round?
Cotton percale sheets may well be the pinnacle of sheet sets for both warm weather and cool weather. While they have been acknowledged for many years for their inherent coolness and crispness, the same qualities that make them so great in the summer actually help to make them excellent year-round choices.

Why Are Percale Sheets Good For Warm Weather?
Percale sheets are made with a surprisingly simple weaving technique. Each thread will pass over one and under one thread. It is a simple way to overlap the threads. How does that differ from other weaving methods? Sateen sheets, for example, will have four threads overlap a single thread. This results in a much softer feel. However the cost is durability and longevity. While sateen sheets will of course not fall apart in a few short months, percale sheets will continue to provide night after night of wonderful sleep for much longer. The weaving method for percale sheets allows the sheets to feel cooler than other sheets. They also feel far crisper than competing sheets. This translates to climbing into bed on a warm night and feeling cooler and more comfortable right away.
Why They Are Also Great For Cooler Weather
Percale sheets do not have a magical ability to stay cool all night long. Once a person lies down in bed the warmth from their body will warm the sheets and the perceived coolness will disappear. They do seemingly cool down faster than other kinds of sheets so that portion of the percale sheet that is not in contact with the body will cool down and allow the feeling of coolness to return once contact is made with it again. While this is dependent on the manufacturer, percale sheets will often feel lighter and airier than other kinds of sheets. Although the tendency to go for warmer sheets in winter is often followed, many people will also follow this up with a warm heavy blanket or down comforter on top. If this is the case, warm sheets really aren’t needed. The lightness and crispness of percale will result in a more comfortable night’s sleep, yet still allow the sleeper to stay warm.
Fabric Options
Percale sheet sets come in all kinds of fabric. Since percale refers to the weaving method, there are many different fabric options available. 100% cotton percale sheet sets are probably the most popular. Egyptian cotton is often used for percale sheets as well. Polyester/Cotton blends can be used, although many people complain about the sticky feeling of polyester and their lack of breathability. On the flip side of that, many people are very happy with their poly/cotton percale sheets. Linen percale sheets exist, as do linen/cotton blends. The choices are many, however if one is trying percale sheets for the first time, a 100% cotton percale sheet set is recommended. Thread count is important, but not as much as the salespeople will try to make it. 200 and above is great for thread count, while going much beyond 500 thread count may not have any discernable advantage.
Percale Sheets – Great In Any Season
Percale sheets are in many ways the most desirable sheets around. Strong and durable because of the way they are woven yet lightweight and crisp because of this very same process. Try out a percale sheet set today and see if you soon find yourself sleeping on only percale sheets.
