Percale sheet sets are not particularly cheap. Well, good quality ones aren’t, at least. Nobody likes spending good money on something just to have it wear out or fall apart before they think it should. So what can be done to preserve your crisp new percale sheets for as long as you can? The following are a few tips that can help extend the life of your percale bedding.
Wash Regularly – Sounds obvious, but this is one of the things that can destroy sheets faster than anything. Oils, dirt and sweat from your skin can actually begin to break down the fabric of your percale sheets over time. Washing them regularly will help reduce this problem. Once a week is a good average – not so long as to become really dirty, yet not so often as to feel like you’re always doing the laundry. Yes, the act of washing them will also produce small amounts of damage each time; however, the alternative to this is not washing them. Nobody wants that. Also be sure to wash or change your bed clothes equally as often.
Shower Before Bed – While many people do this, not everybody does. Showering before you go to bed will remove all the grit and grime and sweat from the day. Going to bed clean will reduce the amount of dirt that gets ground into your percale sheets, leaving them stronger over time.
Line Dry If Possible – Part of the allure of percale sheets is their “crisp” feeling. By drying your percale bedding on a clothes line they will feel even crisper. Plus they will avoid the damage that comes with tumbling around in the dryer. If the dryer must be used for practical reasons, use a lower heat. High heat will dry them faster, but that will also create a stressful environment for your percale.
Avoid Ironing – Percale does have the tendency to wrinkle, it is true. Not as badly as linen, but then again nothing wrinkles as badly as linen. Ironing percale will make it super smooth and perfect and wonderful – until you sleep in it the first night. Then it looks like it hasn’t been ironed. So save yourself the time and hassle of ironing those big percale bed sheets and just leave them as they are. Remember that ironing creates a lot of heat and stress for percale cotton sheets. While it won’t destroy it at once (well, it won’t as long as you don’t forget and leave the iron on it) ironing can possible reduce the lifetime of your sheets. Why do something that lasts until you use the product as intended, eats up time and electricity and also damages the product?
Buy Two Sets And Cycle Them – Technically this tip cannot extend the life of your percale sheets. However it will seem as if they are lasting twice as long. In addition, you give yourself more time to launder the set that needs to be washed, as well as giving yourself enough time to line dry them, situation permitting. If you have decided to switch over to only percale sheets and nothing else, this shouldn’t be a problem.
If Any Damage Occurs, Repair It Immediately – This almost goes without saying. Leaving a rip or a tear to just get bigger is asking for trouble. Before you know it, you catch a toe in it during the night and wake up with your lovely percale sheets ripped in half. Avoid the heartache of that and break out the needle and thread at the first sign of trouble.
Enjoy Them – Realize that percale doesn’t last forever. Like everything else it will deteriorate with age and some day need to be replaced. The great thing about percale is that day will take longer to get here than many other sheet fabrics on the market. So be thankful you have found what many consider to be the ultimate sheet fabric and enjoy your percale sheets every time you lay down to sleep.
