Two Commonly Held Myths and Misconceptions About Percale Sheets

200541840-001When Spring is in full swing, many people turn their thoughts to cleaning out their closets and houses in an effort to clear out the dreary old winter and bring in the light and refreshing nature of Spring. One way people do this is by changing their bedding. Out are the heavy flannel sheets and big blankets and in are lighter, crisper and more airy sheet styles. Often percale sheets are chosen for their unique properties, however a prospective buyer of percale needs to know what they are getting and what they are not. Following are 2 myths about percale sheets and the truth behind each myth.

Myth #1 – Percale is a kind of fabric.
This is probably the biggest misconception about percale bed sheets and percale in general. Percale is not a kind of fabric like cotton, silk or linen. Percale is a method of weaving used when making a fabric out of hundreds of threads. This weaving method has come to be associated with the sheets that are made out of them, giving rise to the myth that you can have cotton bed sheets, silk bed sheets, linen bed sheets or percale bed sheets, along with other kinds of sheets. Truth is, you can have percale sheets made out of a wide variety of material, which leads us to the next myth.

Myth #2 – Percale sheets are only available in 100% cotton.
The reverse of this is often heard or stated as well – percale bed sheets are not made with cotton at all. As mentioned in myth #1, percale is a weaving method used to create a sheet of fabric. The materials used are up to the producer. Often 100% cotton is used when making percale bed sheets and this is by and large the most popular choice. However poly-cotton blends are available on the market, as are 100% linen percale bed sheets and their linen/cotton blended cousins. If you have a particular kind of fabric that is your favorite, odds are good you can find percale bed sheets made from it. Unless it is silk. Silk sheets are a whole other ballgame.

So there you have it – two persistent myths about percale sheets that have now been laid to rest. Personally, we love percale sheets. I mean, why else would we make an entire website dedicated to spreading the good word about them. We hope that this information and the other information on this website will help people make an informed decision about percale sheets and also get them excited about the possibility of getting the best sheets they can find. Good luck!
